Top 5 Navigation and Maps Apps on iOS in South Africa in Q4 2022

The fourth quarter of 2022 saw notable trends in the performance of the top five navigation and maps applications on the iOS platform in South Africa. Based on data from Sensor Tower, here are the key insights:

Google Maps maintained a steady performance in weekly downloads, ranging from approximately 6.5K to 8.8K throughout the quarter. The app saw a peak in downloads during the week of December 19, reaching around 8.8K. Weekly active users fluctuated between 600K to 700K, peaking at over 707K in early December.

Waze Navigation & Live Traffic experienced a consistent increase in weekly downloads, starting at about 3.1K in late September and rising to over 4.2K by mid-December. The app’s weekly active users remained stable, hovering around 170K to 180K throughout the quarter.

Google Earth saw weekly downloads ranging from 885 to 1.5K, with a noticeable increase towards the end of the quarter, peaking at 1.1K in the last week of December. Active users for Google Earth were relatively stable, with numbers fluctuating between 7K to 8.8K and peaking at 8.8K in mid-October.

SANRAL Pothole App experienced significant growth in downloads. Starting with modest numbers, the app saw a substantial spike in the week of November 28, reaching over 1.9K downloads. Another peak was observed in the week of December 19, with approximately 1.8K downloads.

MyNetstar, which launched in late November, saw impressive initial download numbers. Weekly downloads increased from 176 in the week of November 21 to over 1.6K by mid-December, before slightly declining to 520 in the last week of December.
